The Almaty State Nature Reserve was officially established on May 6, 1931, by a special resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Kazakh ASSR on the territory of the Small Almaty forest area. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the Almaty Reserve, one of the oldest nature conservation institutions in the country.

At the initiative of the Almaty State Nature Reserve, a scientific conference was held online.

Beksultan Nurlanovich Meirbekov, Head of the Department of Specially Protected Natural Areas of the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, congratulated the reserve staff on the anniversary and highly appreciated their contribution to nature conservation.

During the conference, researchers from the Reserve’s Department of Science, Information and Monitoring presented their reports and shared the results of scientific research and monitoring activities.

The event brought together specialists in the fields of nature conservation and science, who exchanged professional experience:

  • Baurzhan Sabyrovich Dzhunuspayev — Head of the Department of Science, Information and Monitoring of the Aksu-Zhabagly State Nature Reserve, with the presentation: “Issues of Protecting Rare Mammal Species in Specially Protected Natural Areas.”
  • Zhanar Kuanyshevna Naurozbayeva — PhD, Head of the Regional Climate Change Laboratory at the Institute of Geography and Water Security JSC, with the presentation: “Transformation of the Ecosystems of the Almaty Reserve and the Dynamics of Climate Indicators: From Retrospective Analysis to Forecasts up to 2100.”
  • Gauhar Rakhmetullayevna Baspakova — PhD, Senior Researcher at the A.A. Tursynov Water Resources Laboratory, with the presentation: “Current Water Regime of the Talgar and Issyk Rivers.”
  • Alexander Kokarev — Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Head of the Laboratory for Monitoring the Dynamics of Snow and Glacier Resources at the UNESCO Category 2 Regional Glaciological Centre for Central Asia, with the presentation: “Dynamics of Glaciers in Kazakhstan.”
  • Gulbanu Aueskhanovna Sadyrova — Doctor of Biological Sciences, representative of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development and Professor at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, with the presentation: “Conservation of Biodiversity of Rare and Endangered Plant Species in the Almaty State Nature Reserve: Distribution Features and Protection Measures.”
  • Addina Nurbolatkyzy Torekhan — Master’s degree graduate of Narxoz University, with the presentation: “Flora of the Almaty Reserve under Climate Change Conditions: Environmental Challenges and Conservation Strategies.”

During the conference, participants discussed issues related to environmental safety, climate change, glacier studies, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of natural ecosystems, as well as presented important scientific proposals and recommendations.
