A round table discussion entitled “Living Planet: Biodiversity Conservation as the Foundation of a Sustainable Future” was held at the library of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

The event was organized by the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development and the Central Asian-German Institute for Ecosystem and Biodiversity Conservation of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences.

During the meeting, participants discussed current issues related to the conservation of rare and endangered species in Kazakhstan. In particular, the following topics were addressed:

  • conservation of wild tulips;
  • protection and population monitoring of the snow leopard;
  • preservation of unique genetic resources such as the Sievers apple tree.

Amanbol Sailaukhanuly, a theriologist from the Department of Science, Information and Monitoring of the Almaty State Nature Reserve, took part in the round table and delivered a presentation entitled: “The Snow Leopard as a Keystone Species: Monitoring and Conservation Results in the Almaty State Nature Reserve.”

Throughout the event, participants engaged in comprehensive discussions on biodiversity conservation and strengthened the connection between scientific research and practical conservation efforts.
