THE VOICE OF THE HIGH PEAKS — THE HIMALAYAN SNOWCOCK

In the high-altitude areas of the Almaty State Nature Reserve lives a remarkable guardian of the mountains — the Himalayan Snowcock.

The Himalayan Snowcock inhabits elevations of 2,500–4,000 metres above sea level, occurring in the coniferous spruce forest zone as well as in the subalpine and alpine belts. It can be difficult to spot on rocky and gravel-covered mountain slopes, as its natural plumage blends remarkably well with the surrounding landscape.

The Himalayan Snowcock is often found in areas inhabited by Siberian ibex. It is an extremely cautious and vigilant bird. When it senses danger, it gives a distinctive whistling alarm call, warning not only other snowcocks but also nearby ibex of a potential threat.

When danger approaches, the snowcock takes flight from the mountain slope and may fly from one ridge or peak to another. In winter, it prefers mountain ridges and exposed areas where little or no snow accumulates.

The Himalayan Snowcock is a resident bird of the Almaty State Nature Reserve, remaining in the area throughout the year.
